Chief Operations Officer

About This Position

We are currently looking for an experienced COO to ensure that the company has the proper operational controls, administrative and reporting procedures, and people systems in place to actualize our mission. The right candidate will have solid operational experience in a digital agency, but will also have experience and a demonstrated interest in working with Indigenous communities. The ideal candidate should also be familiar with concepts like growing the company with Indigenous values, decolonizing traditional management structures (learning from systems like Teal / Holacracy), B Corp certification, and increasing our positive social and environmental impact. You will be a key thought leader in helping us achieve these goals, while soliciting and integrating feedback from the whole team.

Narrative of Responsibilities

If you were to get this role, on a typical day you could expect to work closely with the project managers and product leads that you will supervise. You are hopefully not too tied up with client work, as you will be tracking the overall efficacy of our products, services areas (i.e., web design, custom software, design and branding, and digital communications) and keeping an eye on our finances to ensure that we are profitable. Of course, you may need to jump in and help the team with projects as needed. It just won’t be all the time. 

Another thing you might be doing on a typical day is supporting the project managers and product leads to ensure they have what they need to properly analyze projects and to complete their project retrospectives. This will involve great listening skills, empathy, mutual trust, and respect. You will be their supervisor, but your approach will not be just “telling them what to do” in a hierarchical management sense. You will be empowering them to take on more responsibility, to be more autonomous, and to develop their capacity to make their own decisions. If the team comes to you with questions, you will be encouraged to reflect the question back to them,  asking “what do you think?” or “how would you approach this?” rather than immediately giving them your opinion or advice. Mentoring will be a key part of your role.

Another area you will be involved in is in people operations. You will be working with the CEO and Director of People Operations on things like writing job descriptions, vetting candidates, and helping design an effective team structure. We are big on creating systems at Animikii. In conjunction with the team, you will help ensure that anything worth doing twice is documented and turned into a policy. 

One lens that will be critical to your work is continually identifying ways to improve Animikii’s social and environmental impact. Sure, we are a business and we need to make money to survive. However, we are clearly about more than making money at Animikii. We want to use business as a force for good. Your commitment to balancing a financially sustainable business with positive outcomes for people and the planet is of the utmost importance.

What We’re Looking For...

In an ideal world, we are looking for folks with the following combination of skills and experience. This is our wish list. However, we’re willing to give anybody who is values-aligned and passionate about the opportunity here a shot:

  • Undergraduate degree, graduate degree, or equivalent experience.
  • At least five years of experience in operations at a digital agency overseeing human resources, finances, operations, strategies, and managing people and teams.
  • Experience in a product environment / SaaS environment.
  • Proven track record of managing complex budgets successfully.
  • Demonstrable commitment to social and environmental impact.
  • Experience in a remote-friendly company, using online tools and software.
  • Motivated self-starter; ability to start, manage, and prioritize multiple projects.
  • Excellent communication and creative thinking.
  • Team collaborator who is willing to wear many hats and jump in on many aspects of our projects, even if it’s outside of your core skill set.
  • Individuals who are interested to implement Animikii’s core values through the 7 Sacred Teachings  (Humility, Truth, Honesty, Wisdom, Respect, Courage and Love).
