Animikii is a Victoria-based social enterprise (Certified B Corp / Certified Aboriginal Business) that works with leading, Indigenous-focused organizations from all industries to drive positive change for Indigenous Peoples through technology. Learn more at www.animikii.com/careers.
We are currently looking for an experienced leader to grow and develop our Digital Communications department. This department leads and manages projects related to digital communications strategy development, design and branding, website development, and delivering digital campaigns. Our department is currently 6 FTEs (and growing) plus several regular extended team members (contractors). This role will be directly responsible for managing sustainable growth of the department, while supporting (and being supported by) a growing number of direct reports.
The right candidate will have solid operational experience in a digital agency, but will also have experience and a demonstrated interest in working with Indigenous communities. The ideal candidate is excited to join an organization that is interested in growing the company and its people with Indigenous values, decolonizing traditional management structures, operating as B Corp, and increasing our positive social and environmental impact.
If you were to get this role, on a typical day you could expect to work closely with team members in your department that you will supervise, primarily on client-focused projects through all departmental service areas including digital communications, website development and design. As an experienced communications professional, you may need to wear many hats and jump in to help the team with projects as needed — especially as we continue to develop our processes, systems and the department. It won’t be everyday, but we are looking for a hands-on leader.
From time to time, you will also collaborate with other Animikii teams, software department, cross-disciplinary projects, as well as providing all internal digital communications to our growing suite of software products.
Another thing you will be doing on a typical day is supporting the project managers to ensure they have what they need to properly analyze projects and to complete their project retrospectives. This will involve great listening skills, empathy, mutual trust, and respect. You will be their supervisor, but your approach will not be just “telling them what to do” in a hierarchical management sense. You will be empowering them to take on more responsibility, to be more autonomous, and to develop their capacity to make their own decisions. If the team comes to you with questions, you will be encouraged to reflect the question back to them, asking “what do you think?” or “how might you approach this?” rather than immediately giving them your opinion or advice. Mentoring and coaching will be a key part of your role.
You will work with our CEO, COO and People Operations to strategically scale the department with an entrepreneurial mindset. This means keeping an eye on departmental sales and finances to ensure resiliency and profitability while also keeping our hiring plan top of mind. This will include things like writing job descriptions, vetting candidates, and helping design an effective team structure.
One lens that will be critical to your work is continually identifying ways to improve Animikii’s social and environmental impact. Sure, we are a business and we need to make money to survive. However, we are clearly about more than making money at Animikii. We want to use business as a force for good. Your commitment to balancing a financially sustainable business with positive outcomes for people and the planet is of the utmost importance.
In an ideal world, we are looking for folks with the following combination of skills and experience. This is our wish list. However, we’re willing to give anybody who is values-aligned and passionate about this opportunity a shot:

We strive to provide those candidates with an equitable and accessible recruitment process. If we can offer accommodations for you in the recruitment process or you have feedback on how to make our recruiting more accessible, please let us know.
This position is remote-friendly and the start date is negotiable. Competitive benefits package and salary commensurate with experience.
