Ruby On Rails Developer - Full-time

We are currently looking to expand our team with a developer for all of our web-based software projects. While the developer will be adept at software development and contribute primarily to the backend, we are also looking for somebody who is interested in full-stack development as well. This position will primarily support one of our largest software projects at Animikii.

The developer will play a key role in software development and managing complex, multidisciplinary technical projects. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Design and develop new software products and user interfaces using front-end and back-end technologies (primarily Ruby on Rails, React.js, jQuery, Bootstrap).
  • Design and create database schemas that represent and support business processes.
  • Identify bottlenecks and bugs, and devise solutions to these problems.
  • Help maintain code quality & organization, based on the Animikii coding style guide.
  • Support, maintain & upgrade legacy software projects previously developed by Animikii.
  • Provide direct technical support to existing clients and participate in weekly client support calls.
  • Ensure thorough testing and quality assurance for all website & web software projects.
  • Write technical documentation as necessary.
  • Set up and maintain your own development environment.


  • Support our giving-back program through pro-bono time, volunteering, workshop delivery or other social impact initiatives that are important to the team.
  • Continuous learning to keep ahead of evolving technologies through individual professional development plan.

What We're Looking For...

  • Degree in computer science, software engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Proficiency in idiomatic Ruby and Rails with 3+ years dedicated Ruby on Rails experience in a client service or agency environment.
  • Clear understanding of when to use Rails convenience mechanisms, and when to use more advanced object-oriented techniques.
  • Experience with Rails 3, 4 & 5.
  • Familiarity with concepts of MVC, ORM, RESTful, JSON APIs, Browser SPAs, App State Management and responsive UI design.
  • Understanding of fundamental design principles behind a scalable application.
  • Proficiency in using git and Github in a team environment.
  • Familiarity with development aiding tools such as NPM, Bundler, Rake, Capistrano, RVM, rbenv, Homebrew, Webpack, etc.
  • Motivated self-starter; ability to start, manage and prioritize multiple projects.
  • Knows project management principles, processes and software.
  • Customer service and interpersonal skills to communicate, consult and build relationships with clients, staff and partners.
  • Excellent communication and creative thinking.
  • Team collaborators who are willing to wear many hats and jump in on many aspects of our projects, even if it’s outside of your core skill set.
  • Experience and/or a demonstrated interest in working with Indigenous communities.
  • Individuals who are interested to implement Animikii’s core values through the 7 Sacred Teachings  (Humility, Truth, Honesty, Wisdom, Respect, Courage and Love).

Animikii’s headquarters are in Victoria and we have offices in Vancouver and Whitehorse however we’re a remote-friendly organization and would be open to a mixed schedule of in-office and remote work. Start date is negotiable.
